Description
From the fjord to 1,848 metres: Norway’s biggest climb from sea level to a summit, with a stone tower at the top.
Skåla rises straight out of Lovatnet in Loen, and the trail goes all the way from the water to the summit: about 1,800 metres of ascent, more than any other marked route in Norway from fjord to peak. At the top stands Skålatårnet, the round stone tower built in 1891 that still serves as a mountain hut. The views take in Nordfjord, Lovatnet, the Jostedalsbreen glacier and a sea of peaks in every direction.
What to expect
About 16 km round trip, 1,800 metres up and the same down, 7–9 hours including breaks. The path is well built, much of it stone steps, but it is relentless, and the upper section can hold snow into July. We walk at a steady pace with regular breaks, eat at the tower, and take the descent carefully: this is a long day that rewards fitness and patience rather than speed.

We meet at the Skåla trailhead in Loen, about 50 minutes by road from Nordfjordeid, and start early to allow the full day on the mountain. If you would like transport from Nordfjordeid, ask when you book or email us and we will arrange it.

Good to know
Very demanding. Age 16 and up, with excellent hiking fitness: you should be used to long mountain days and rocky terrain. Boots with ankle support and grip, and clothing for a full day above the treeline, are essential. Season: summer, when weather permits. The route may be adjusted or the departure cancelled for safety in bad weather or dangerous snow conditions, with a full refund.
Bring
Full waterproofs, warm layers including hat and gloves even in summer, at least 1.5 litres of water, a proper lunch plus snacks, sunglasses and sun cream, a headtorch for late descents, and a daypack to carry it all.
